John Joy Biography
(1925 - 2012)
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Joy studied at the Central Technical School under Peter Haworth, Doris McCarthy and Carl Schaeffer, also at the Ontario College of Art. A portrait and landscape painter in oils, watercolours, charcoal, and pen and ink. Joy’s work was well received, with special note paid to his winter scenes, weather beaten houses, barns and ancient farm machinery.
Joy held a number of one man shows including the following: at North York Public Central Library, Willowdale (Nov. 1964), the Markham Centennial Library, Ontario (Sept. 1968) and a two man show at the Sobot Gallery, Toronto (Apr. 1965). Joy gave a number of demonstrations throughout Ontario and was represented by the following galleries: Malloney’s Gallery at Ontario House (London, England); the Lillian Morrison Gallery (Tor., Ont.); the Sobot Gallery. (Tor., Ont.), and the Tamarack Studio (Banff, Alta.). One of his paintings of Algoma is represented in the permanent collection of the Educational Corporation of Chicago, Illinois, having been chosen for the Corporation’s World Book Encyclopedia.
