Georges Delfosse Biography
(1869 - 1939)

Born at Saint-Henri-de-Mascouche, he took a classical course at St. Laurent College near Montreal, then studied painting under Chabert and Brymner in Montreal; also in Paris, France under Alexis Harlamoff and Léon Bonnat. He did portraits of Sir Wilfrid Laurier; Hon. J. L. Tarte; Hon. L. O. David; Sir William Hingston, and Judge A. Ouimet. He painted around 200 large paintings for churches in Canada and the United States; also ten historical scenes of Montreal which were bought by the old municipality of Maisonneuve (A. H. Robson noted Delfosse’s interest in historical subjects, particularly of old Montreal); he also did seven historic paintings in the St. James Basilica, Montreal. While sketching in Paris in 1914 he was mistaken for a German spy but he was quickly released when it was confirmed that he was a Canadian artist. The National Gallery of Canada owns one of his canvases. He died in Montreal, Quebec.
