From the Estate of Dennis Reid

Cowley Abbott is privileged to be entrusted with artworks from the collection of the esteemed Dennis Reid (1943-2023). Dennis was an author, academic, professor and pivotal member of the Canadian art community.

As a leading expert in Canadian art, he had a vast amount of experience holding numerous roles throughout his career, including thirty years at the Art Gallery of Ontario, as well as previous roles as a visiting lecturer at the University of Toronto, Professor at Carleton University and Curator at the National Gallery of Art.

He was the author of numerous publications, including A Concise History of Canadian Painting, a text that has been in publication for more than thirty years and is considered the definitive volume on the art of Canada. Furthermore, Reid’s book on the celebrated Canadian artist Cornelius Krieghoff, entitled, “Krieghoff: Images of Canada” was of great importance.

Dennis received multiple awards, including being named a Member of the Order of Canada (1998), Honorary Fellow of the Ontario College of Arts and Design (2000), receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Lethbridge (2001), and recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012).
