Candida Höfer is known for her extremely technical photographs. She was a student of Bernd and Hiller Becher at the Dusseldorf Academy between from 1976 to 1982. The artist works in a series format. She photographs public spaces without human presence. Instead, she focuses on the interior, its architecture, objects, and function.

“Palais Garnier, Paris VIII” is from the series Opera De Paris, which the artist completed in 2004/2005. The series focuses on the interiors of the Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille. Gérard Mortier writes in the introduction to the book which was published in conjunction with the series, “Once again she allows us to participate in her very personal view and the highly “intimate” shots, each of them bereft of any human form, yet infused with an intense presence and a treasure trove of memories.”

On October 25th 2022, Candida Höfer was awarded the Luce Award for Achievement in Architecture. This award honours master photographers. Part of the mission of the Luce Foundation is to discover and cultivate emerging talent and promote the appreciation of photography worldwide.
