Varley spent Easter weekend of 1937 in Montreal with Philip Surrey and his mother. During this visit, he painted several studies of Mrs. Surrey and her young son Philip.
These drawings are included in the Varley inventory as “Head and Shoulders”, no. 756 and “Face” as VI 757.
