First Day Covers are envelopes affixed with a stamp on the first day that they are issued and made available to the public. The envelope is stamped with a postmark and a cancellation mark to indicate it was received into the postal service. First Day Covers are collectible items for those who practice philately, and envelopes with a cachet, a coloured printing on the left side of the envelope that relates to the stamp, are a desired addition for collectors. The cachets that have been created over the years were issued, most notably, to celebrate Christmas and the Olympics, expanding into important series commemorating notable Canadians and their achievements, various modes of transportation, Canada’s flora and fauna, anniversaries, world events, etc.

In 1967, on the centenary of Canadian Confederation, the House of Commons Postal Service began its standardized practice of issuing cachets, while in 1971, Canada Post began issuing its own official First Day Cover. In 1994 the House of Commons Postal Service ceased the program of issuing First Day Covers.

This collection of First Day Covers commemorates and celebrates Canadian artists, from the first photographers in Canada to the famous Group of Seven.
