Knowles participation in the Emma Lake Workshops in the 1950s and 1960s greatly influenced and encouraged her interest in landscape painting. Her paintings capture the richness of the prairie landscape through exploration of colour and texture. In “Soft Greens in May”, Knowles' handling of acrylic paint appears as transparent as watercolour, a technique which enables the artist to capture the nuances of the colour and light of Saskatchewan. Although green is used exquisitely in soft, varying hues, Knowles palette is expansive in this painting with a skillful application of blues, yellows and hints of pink throughout.
