The Batchelor family lived in Jacobstow, Cornwall, England. Margaret's father, Frederick Thomas Batchelor, was rector there. He had 15 (!) children, one of them was Anne. “She was an excellent artist specializing in seascapes. The family descendants had two seascapes; unfortunately they were lost in a house move. She also had her paintings exhibited in London where all the pictures were sold out.” “Anne, by 1901 she had moved to Stratton and soon afterwards emigrated to British Columbia, Canada where her brother was living. She taught art in Vancouver and died in 1963 in her 96th year.”
One source indicates Margaret was born in 1877 (but a later source says 1875). I do not know when Margaret came to Vancouver, but she was living in the city in 1911 and must have been there for some time since she was known to the media. The likely scenario is that Margaret was in Vancouver in 1905 when the paintings were made and that Anne was perhaps her teacher.
She migrated to writing and published six books for young women:
Sallie's Children (1912)
Six Devonshire Dumplings (1920)
A Li8le Rhodesian (1922)
The Children of Sunshine Mine: A Story of Rhodesia (1923)
Gwenda's Friend from Home (1924)
Morwenna's Prince (1926)
Married William Manley Philpoas 1912-08-28 in South Africa. She was age 35 at the time, indicating she was born in 1877, contrary to the source cited above. Her residence at the time was London. Her husband was 29 and a mining engineer. There is an article on Margaret Batchelor’s book A Little Rhodesian in the October 31, 1922 , Vancouver Daily World.
