A notable artist and influential educator, Ethel Seath was a prominent figure in Montreal, Quebec, through her contributions to art and her long-standing commitment to educating young women. A member of both the Beaver Hall Group and the later Canadian Group of Painters, Seath began her career as a commercial illustrator shortly after highschool at the Montreal Witness (later the Montreal Star) in order to financially support her family. In 1917, Seath became a teacher at The Study, an all girl’s private school where she taught until her retirement in 1962. Seath would also teach classes at the Art Association of Montreal from 1937 to 1941.
Seath actively exhibited throughout her career, participating in exhibitions from the Art Association of Montreal, the Royal Canadian Academy, and at the National Gallery of Canada. Seath’s works can be found in the collections of The National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
