Anne Meredith Barry received her formal arts education from the Ontario College of Art, graduating in 1954. Barry’s artistic practice was deeply transformed following a visit to Newfoundland for the first time in 1971. In 1987, Barry purchased and restored St.Michael’s printshop in St.Michaels Newfoundland, remaining there for the rest of her life. Barry was deeply involved in her local arts community and also shared her skill to remote areas of the country where she conducted art workshops. Barry’s artistic career spanned four decades and her works were exhibited widely throughout Canada and internationally. Her work was exhibited at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery, Newfoundland, the Blackwood Gallery, Toronto, and the Art Gallery at University of Ulster at Belfast, Ireland. Barry completed commission works for the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and Parks Canada. Barry’s works can be found in the corporate collections of American Express, Bell Canada, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Canadian Department of External Affairs, and for Shell Oil. Barry was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 1995. In 1997, Barry received an honourary degree from Memorial University. Two weeks before her passing, Barry was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2003.
