Joyce Millar, Anne Kahane Dualitiés Dualities, Ottawa, 2023, page 151, a similar work, Icarus I, reproduced page 151
As Joyce Millar writes in Anne Kahane Dualitiés Dualities, "Perhaps the only piece from the 1970s to carry a narrative and suggest a context is Icarus (1974) of which there are three versions. Parting from the Greek myth where Icarus falls to earth while daring to fly to the sun on wings of feathers and wax, Kahane’s Icarus I (1974) [4-12] has his wooden wings securely attached with brass screws to his body. He stands immobile, without any suggestion of motion, let alone flight. The only area in which the artist allows for movement is in the hinged sections of the wings. A result of imaginative craftsmanship, they can be unfurled as if in readiness for flight, but ironically, Icarus is securely attached to his base, any action frozen."
