Jim Dine and Tara Devereux, Jim Dine Prints, 1970-1977, New York, 1977, listed and reproduced, no. 158
Jim Dine created a related series of portraits of Arthur Rimbaud in 1973, which includes the etchings Rimbaud (Museum of Modern Art, New York); Rimbaud, Alchemy on Japanese Paper and Rimbaud at Harrar in 1883 (both at the British Museum), and this final image, Rimbaud Dead at Marseilles (Cleveland Museum of Art).
"At a Paris bookstall in 1970, Dine bought a copy of Historia magazine that had a portrait of Rimbaud on the front cover. At that time, he began reading Rimbaud and the portrait was to become the focus of a series of prints." Dine produced the Rimbaud portraits as a sequence of etchings using a single copper plate. He progressively reduced the plate's size, adding new etched lines, and eventually drilling out the eyes to let the white paper rise in relief.
