Gift from the Artist
Estate of Alex Cameron
Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, held at the Art Gallery of Ontario, February 14-March 15, 1970, this foldable limited edition print was created to accompany the exhibition catalogue and is an edition of 200.
A Survey marked the beginning of Snow's use of repurposing earlier works for new works, by combining images of the artist's work alongside family photographs. "The whole retrospective thing," he told Joe Medjuck in 1971, "made me look back at my old work for the first time. I was interested in the idea of using the records of old work as the material for new works."
Michael Snow gifted this framed work to the artist Alex Cameron. As a young man, Cameron worked as a preparator at the Art Gallery of Ontario and helped install the 1970 exhibition survey of Snow’s work. Snow likely gifted this montage to several people at the AGO who were involved with the exhibition preparations.
