Newman photographed this gripping portrait looking up at Warhol’s chin and nose, so his subject fills most of the picture, a towering monolith rising from a black turtleneck base. Andy’s eyes are almost crossed as he examines his nose, recently abraded during a cosmetic procedure.
After Alex Cameron received the portrait of Andy from a girlfriend for his birthday in 1973 or 1974, it was upstairs in his old brick and wood coachhouse for the years he lived above the ground floor painting place. The old garage was freezing in the winter so Alex had installed a wood stove near his bed, and hung Andy on the brick wall above the stove. It was fun to see Andy look down his nose at the stove-pipe.
