According to O.M. Malte who shared his ship cabin with Banting and Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson, this picture was painted on their trip to the Arctic on board the Beothic in 1927. Banting and Jackson became friends and traveling partners after meeting at the Arts & Letters Club in Toronto. Banting applied to the Department of the Interior to be appointed medical officer to the Beothic, which was resupplying settlements and RCMP outposts in the Eastern Arctic.O.M. Malte was a government sponsored botanist who supplied the bootlegged rum for the voyage. Banting and Jackson would sit atop the deck of the ship and paint the passing icebergs and snow and waves on small wooden panels.
