The consignor of this painting has shared their recollection of their interaction with Norval Morrisseau, "I was raised in Madsen, Ontario and went to high school in Red Lake. From 1967 to 1971 I worked for “Red Lake Travel Service”, living in the apartment in the basement. From time to time Norval Morrisseau would stop in. Sometimes he would come in and tell stories just to get out of the cold. At other times he would try to sell me things or borrow money. Sometimes he would give me things as collateral, always saying he would redeem them when he got some cash, which he never did.
One day he came in with 3 paintings done in acrylic on brown kraft paper. I bought a 26” x 20” painting of 3 loons sitting on a fish. I asked him if he would do some paintings on masonite as there was no canvas available in Red Lake to my knowledge. Weeks later Norval came by and picked up two pieces of masonite."
