The painting was purchased in April of 1977 from the antique store, The Brass Bed in Toronto at Yonge St. near McPherson Ave. The painting was recognized as a possible version of St. Catherine of Siena, 1840 by Antoine Plamondon (see Antoine Plamondon Théophile Hamel: Two Painters of Quebec [R.H. Hubbard, Ottawa, 1970, page 134]). The firm in Cheapside London that produced the canvas (see stamped company name) was a well known supplier to artists.
