Horst P. Horst, a pioneer in fashion photography and highly influential in this genre, elegantly captured his subjects. The glamorous Baroness Pauline de Rothschild, sitting low on a stool, legs crossed and dressed elegantly all in black, was his subject here. Pauline de Rothschild was a fashion designer, writer, and woman glamorously unafraid to express her individuality, famed for her opulent interior design and extravagant parties. “She can dominate a room from a footstool,” her friend Diana Vreeland spoke of her, and in this image, Horst captures her doing just that.
