Duane Michals, who enjoys creating narratives within his series of photographs, conveys in this portfolio a reflection on his visit with René Magritte in Brussels when he was thirty-five and Magritte sixty-five. This portfolio is a reflection on an experience profound to Michals, as he stated for Times: “Among my pantheon of myths, René Magritte casts the furthest shadow of illumination…He was very kind to me, giving me carte blanche to his treasures. I walked all the way back to New York from Belgium. My visit still lingers with the eyes of my portfolio.”

These six silver prints depict René Magritte in a bowler hat, multiple exposures of René and Georgette Magritte, multiple exposures of René Magritte and his easel, a double image Terrarium, and a nude painting in the interior of Magritte's home.

Duane Michals
(1932)

Duane Michals is an innovative contributor to artistic photography whose work is grounded in narrative and film-like sequences. He is known for manipulating the medium to evoke various emotions and ideas. Rather than using text to explain his work, he incorporates it into the image to add an additional dimension of meaning and thought provocation. Michals obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Denver and worked for some time as a photojournalist. He then attended Parsons School of Design with an interest in graphic design before his attention was pulled towards photography. In the 1960s and 1970s, he worked as a commercial photographer for Esquire, Mademoiselle Magazine and Vogue. He has photographed many celebrities and artists, including Tilda Swinton, Meryl Streep, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte and Andy Warhol.
