This renowned woodcut by Edwin Holgate depicts his wife Frances climbing the stairs at their cottage in Natashquan, Quebec. Holgate has carefully arranged the composition to highlight the figure and stairs in dramatic high contrast, illuminated by the lamp held by Frances. The skillfully delineated areas in half light also provide both volume and texture.
