sold together with two albumen prints of Professor Herbert Strainge Long’s grandparents taken in 1863 and a daguerreotype of his grandfather.

These Mohawk baskets belonged to the family of Herbert Strainge Long, PhD (1919-2014), retired chairman of classics at Case Western Reserve University. His grandfather had been an Indian agent on the Mohawk Reservation on the St. Lawrence River in Canada, where Herbert’s father had grown up and learned to speak Mohawk. Professor Long was also fluent in Mohawk and learned it in his retirement from teaching in 1992.
