In an accompanying letter, the artist describes the work as “begun with a colour idea at 2 A.M. one morning and worked on until 5 A.M. after completing of the background. The painting contains elements of my most painted theme - “The City Nocturne” - tall buildings, almost futuristic in design yet still retaining a certain down-to-earthness in construction. All of this is surrounded in a haze of colour representing the “Nocturne”. The result creates an experience rather than an object”.
