One of Canada’s master landscape painters, A.J. Casson was dedicated to Ontarian subject matter throughout his fruitful career. “Early Morning, Harrington Que.” was painted during one of Casson’s rarer ventures into another province; the municipality of Harrington is situated in the Laurentian mountains, with dense forests and many lakes and rivers. This painting was completed in 1968, when Casson was retired from Sampson-Matthews and was dedicated to painting on a full-time basis. The green landscape with hints of yellow and rust in the background suggests that it is a morning in early fall.
