Acquired directly from the artist
Private Collection, Ontario
Created when David Blackwood was still a teenager, this early painting was acquired from the artist by an acquaintance in Newfoundland, and would remain in the same private collection for decades. Dated 1958 by the artist, this painting is one of very small number of early works by Blackwood to appear at auction. “Lake with Trees” offers a fascinating insight into the formative years of the artist as a young man, embarking on his first tentative steps of what would become a life-long devotion to visual art. David Blackwood would go on to become one of Canada’s most accomplished printmakers, celebrated for his stirring depictions of the life and legends of his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
