As James King notes in “Bertram Brooker: Life & Work”, “[This] watercolour done in 1899 is Brooker’s first surviving work of art. Painted when he was ten or eleven years old, it features an exultant Christ figure and illustrates the line “Simply to Thy cross I cling” from the celebrated “Rock of Ages” hymn published in 1763.”
