This gem of a painting was once owned by the prolific art collector, Ernest E. Poole. In 1961, Poole and his wife, Gertrude, formed the Ernest E. Poole Foundation, which managed and dispersed the couple’s large collection. These donations have been significant, particularly to the Art Gallery of Alberta, which houses 90 works of art from the collection.
From 1919 to 1924, Clarence Gagnon lived in Baie-Saint-Paul located in Charlevoix County. He had a deep affection for the region and often made sketching trips on skis in the winter and on foot in the summer. He was sometimes joined by other well-known artists and friends, such as A.Y. Jackson and Edwin Holgate. Gagnon was drawn to the quiet, peaceful scenery and slow pace of life. In “Crépuscule, Charlevoix” the soft pastel palette and flowing brushstrokes instill a sense of calm and impress upon the viewer that in this quiet corner of the world time stands still.
