This is the pastel study for the painting “Spring”, CNE, 1922, no. 299 (repr.), RCA, 1922, no. 170 (repr.). F.S. Challener recorded the sale price for the painting as $1000 in his notes (Edward P. Taylor Library and Archives, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto).

Muriel Miller Miner in “G.A. Reid” (1946) writes about a mural scheme Reid worked out during the years immediately after the war for the living room of the H.H. Love house in Wychwood Park. In the deep frieze surrounding the room Reid developed the seasonal theme, including "spring with its bursting life" (p. 136). Possibly this pastel is related to Reid's work on this project.
