Initially trained as a visual artist, Paul Sharits would become associated with the avant-garde structural film movement. In his installations, he used multiple projectors, continuous looping and sound.
In “Study for ‘Emergence’” we see the artist working out an installation or “score” as described by Kristin M. Jones in her review of an exhibition at Greene Naftali Gallery: “...many of them intricate ‘scores’ for films Sharits made with coloured pencil or marker on graph paper – a method of composition that came naturally as he had studied music as a child, and one that reflected his preoccupation with bridging the boundaries between visual and aural modes of perception.”
