Ross Huggins
(1916 - 1974)

HUGGINS, Ross b. 1916 Born in Toronto, Ontario, an honour graduate of Western Technical School, Toron­to, where he studied under L.A.C. Panton, Rowley Murphy and George Griffin. He trained as a commercial artist and illustrator in various art studios in Toronto then moved to Montreal where he was employed in the art department of Meco Limited (1942). He travelled and studied in the U.K. and in Europe (1942). On his return to Canada he continued with his commercial art career and was appointed Art Director of Young & Rubicam Advertising (1956). He began painting on week­ends and holidays and was encouraged by a friend Lorne Bouchard. He exhibited in the spring exhibitions of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He made painting trips to Quebec’s North Shore and returned frequently to Baie St. Paul and vicinity. In 1959 he became art director of McKim Advertising Limited and remained with this firm until his retirement in 1969 to paint full time. He has painted Canada from coast to coast and his colourful paintings can be seen in the McCready Gal­leries Inc., Toronto, Devoough Gallery, Vancouver and the Gilhooly Gallery Limit­ed in Ottawa. He is represented in private collections in United States, United King­dom, Europe, Russia and Canada. He was winner of the Price Fine Arts Award in the years 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969. He lived with his family at Ingleside, Ontario.
