This work employs a favourite landscape motif of Franz Johnston’s; that of a stream in winter, winding gently among snowy banks. The open expanse of the foreground contrasts with the dark curtain of foliage in the background, directing the viewer’s gaze to the stream with its “turquoise jewel”. Johnston expertly renders light and shadow falling on snowy ground, with delicate variations of yellow and violet. The serene winter scene is enhanced by the artist’s keen eye for detail. Drawing on the influence of 19th century painting, Johnston’s romantic style tended increasingly towards a traditional realism over the course of his career.
