After travelling widely, English born painter Ted Harrison made the Yukon his home for over two decades. With its clear light and expansive skies, the distinct conditions of the arctic environment became fundamental to the artist’s idiosyncratic visual style. In “Hurrah for Spring”, two figures erupt with glee at the sight of the northern migration of geese, signalling the arrival of spring. Even the family’s dog shares in the cheerful mood. Using simplified lines and flattened forms, Harrison had the remarkable ability to imbue each figure and animal with character and life. His undulating depictions of land and sky seem to vibrate with music. A playful but highly-skilled colourist, Harrison created distinctive harmonies of warm and cool tones to express uncomplicated joy.
