Joyner Waddington’s, auction, Toronto, May 31, 2012, Lot 340 (offered as “Cows”)
Private Collection, Toronto
A June, 2012 letter attached to the reverse of this artwork from Maud Lewis authority, Alan Deacon estimates that this artwork was painted by the artist in 1967 or 1968. Deacon describes the composition (his letter based on viewing images of this artwork) with:
“...The oxen each have four [legs] showing. Oxen works prior to Maud’s fame in 1965 usually have only three legs showing. The oxen, clearly not cows, are yoked with a chain dangling. The work is framed by two conifers and two smaller firs at the base of the larger trees. As usual in the painting there is a high horizon and very little sky. The work is thinly painted which is typical for this time period and one can clearly see evidence of pencil outlining of the subject matter. Although the painting is bright most of the colours are flat. The work is unsigned, but given the subject matter, composition, size, type of board, it is clearly the work of Maud Lewis.”
The letter from Alan Deacon is included with this lot.
