Born in the Alsatian town of Mulhouse in 1904 Daniel Brustlein was a cartoonist, book illustrator and painter. He was a regular contributor to the New Yorker and Collier’s magazines, where he published his cartoons under the pen name “Alain”. Even though he is mainly known for his illustrations, he had an extensive exhibition history showing in both New York and Paris, and receiving praise nationally and internationally from art critics including Hilton Kramer. Brustlein and his wife Biala (Janice Tworkov, sister to the Ab-Ex painter Jack Tworkov) also an artist, were friends with some of the most important artists of the Twentieth Century, including Willem and Elaine DeKooning and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

When writing about his paintings many critics refer to influences from the School of Paris. In this painting we can see the influence of Henri Matisse and fauvism as well as influences from Abstract Expressionism. In his concentrated composition bordering on abstraction, Brustlein has chosen a palette that creates a moody atmospheric landscape surrounding the just recognizable architectural features of the church and large building in the centre. Reviewing an exhibition for The New York Times at the Gruenebaum Gallery in New York in 1978 Hilton Kramer writes, “In everything that Daniel Brustlein paints there is a sensibility of great refinement.”
