Helen Ronald / The Estate of William Ronald
William Ronald acquired this artwork from a Toronto gallery during the 1960s after the gallery sold one of his consigned paintings for less than the market value.

In a February, 1964 letter to Avrom Isaacs, Ronald recalled his visit to the gallery, discovery of the discounted sale and acquisition of this artwork and a print by Rufino Tamayo (Lot 221 in this auction):

“Dear Av...One day I walked into this gallery - she started to tremble... She had just seen me on that T.V. thing with Town and Nichols - She had apparently sold the painting for $250. The price then must have been $9-1,200. So for a painting that now is valued at $1,900 American, I ended up with a Tamayo and a Picasso litho. Big deal...”
