Drawing on her memories and surroundings, Maud Lewis gave expression to her rich imagination. A love of nature and affinity for animals is evident throughout her art. In this work, a deer startled by an approaching canoer scampers hurriedly from a winter creek. Bursts of colourful foliage decorate the scene. With sensitivity and humour, Lewis created works of unique charm.
