Lake Massawippi is located about forty minutes south of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and was a popular summer destination in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. John Lyman paints “Lake Massawippi” with wide brushstrokes, giving the landscape a lush, almost tropical quality. Lyman said, “I am simply a painter, not a painter doubling up as an intellectual. I live by my eyes.”
