Helmut Gransow
(1921 - 2012)

Born in Chemnitz, Germany, he studied under Professor Max Kaus at the Academy of Fine Art, Berlin, and with Professor Wilhelm Schnarrenberger in Karlsruhe. He came to Canada in 1949 and has since exhibited his landscapes at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, The Royal Ontario Museum, the Hamilton Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the London Public Library and Art Museum, and the Art Gallery of the University of British Columbia.

His graphics have attracted considerable attention, particularly his block prints and monotypes. His awards include honourable mentions in the Quebec Provincial Exhibition (1958), The Winnipeg Show (1958) and a purchase award from the Art Gallery f Hamilton (1959). He is also represented in the London Public Library and Art Museum and the Calgary Arts Centre. He was a member of The Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (1956). He was an elected member of The Royal Canadian Academy.  Gransow lived in Morin Heights, Quebec and died in Les Résidences Desjardins in Saint Sauveur Québec in 2012.
