Following in the example of his Group of Seven mentors, Alan Collier travelled extensively on painting trips throughout the diverse regions of Canada. With his distinctive sense of pictorial design, Collier depicted this wild thicket with simplicity and directness. Composed within an unusual horizontal format, “Tangled Woods” presents a close-cropped, compacted view. Dense in form and texture, the painting almost approaches abstraction. Collier has made expert use of the palette knife to create a lively, expressive surface. Though limited, the muted range of colours are sufficient to add visual depth to the scene. With its close perspective and repeating verticals, “Tangled Woods” is reminiscent of similar compositional approaches taken by Tom Thomson.
