Folk artist Maud Lewis' pleasing work, Three Black Cats, is one of her most sought after subjects due to its quaint charm and bright colours. This version shows the three yellow-eyed cats situated in front of different coloured tulips of red, orange, pink and white, further detailed with strokes of white illuminating their layers. Above and behind the cats are pink cherry blossoms, also brightened with the use of white in and around the budding flowers. The innocence of the piece is juxtaposed by the artists difficult life which is almost as popular as her art. In a recent exhibition at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, the curator described how “her triumph over her physical disabilities and poverty, the harsh treatment she received at the hands of her family, and her alliance by chance with her husband Everett Lewis, who enabled her successful painting career over many decades.”
