During the early twentieth century, Frederick Hutchison was commissioned by George Darling to create multiple murals to hang in their extravagant home, the paintings to represent the four seasons. The ambitious project is believed to have began in 1904 with completion around 1917. This canvas was painted as part of the project.
A 2010 letter from the Hutchison family to the consignor confirms “Barns in Winter” as part of the “Four Seasons” mural series.
