Daniel Solomon
(1945)

Daniel Solomon is a Toronto-based artist and a professor at OCAD University. He works in painting, sculpture and set design, dividing his time between teaching and his studio practice.

Solomon was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1945. He began painting while studying architecture at the University of Oregon, and relocated to Toronto in 1967. Solomon established his art career in Toronto, exhibiting his work in the city’s galleries and joining the faculty of OCAD in 1970. For over forty years, he has developed his art practice, gaining gallery representation in Toronto, Montreal and Houston. His work often features a vibrant, playful use of colour and an exploration of pictorial space. The abstract imagery of his paintings vary from gestural mark-making to lyrical arrangements of ambiguous forms. Representational elements such as flowers, butterflies and planets have also been incorporated into his paintings.

Solomon has participated in many solo and group exhibitions, and his work is included in a number of prominent public and corporate collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Toronto Dominion Bank and others.
