Purchased in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
By descent to the current Private Collection, Vancouver
A favourite scene of the artist’s, children playing in the winter evokes an innocent charm and memory of childhood play. This nostalgia for youthful joy figures prominently in Lewis’ work as it brought her joy to revisit her own childhood memories and to see the happiness these scenes brought to visitors.
According to Alan Deacon, this artwork was likely painted in 1970. The consignor’s family purchased the painting from a drug store in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Deacon believing that stores in the area would sometimes purchase Maud Lewis works of art for resale.
