Sometimes identified as a Surrealist, Ivan Eyre would simply state that his work is characterized by his own personal mythology. This studio still life, painted in 1971, embraces qualities found in larger more elaborate Eyre paintings of the same period. Boxes, (sometimes unfolding) and crumpled brown paper, generally "throw-away" items, are typical Eyre still life elements. In the early 70s his still life works took on a landscape quality, which is evident here. The eye re-imagines the still life elements of paper, layered fabric and a pear as topography, the box a possible building, while the light coloured background becomes sky. Viewed in this way, the still life is imbued with the mysterious dimensions for which Ivan Eyre is best known.
