The Laurentian village of Grenville, Quebec, located just opposite of Hawkesbury, Ontario, offers picturesque views of the Ottawa river. A favourite region for many of the Group of Seven members and their followers, the rolling mountains and hills of the southern Quebec area offered a range of vantage points for travel and sketching. Here, Casson focuses on a central hill form overlooking an open field lined with whimsical trees. The artist’s signature softer palette and looser brushwork of the period typifies the serene calm of the rural landscape.
