Ontario Society of Artists, Small Picture Exhibition, 1931
Originally born in Tiflis, Russia, Loveroff and his father immigrated to Saskatchewan in 1900. As a young boy in the often lonesome rural prairies, the artist turned to painting as an escape from his boredom during the long winter nights. Having moved to Toronto in 1913 to study at the Central Ontario School of Art, Loveroff studied most notably under J.W. Beatty and J.E.H. MacDonald, honing his technique.
“Valley in Summer” neatly encapsulates the artist’s ability to capture calm atmosphere with the use of colour, influenced by his teachers throughout art school. The use of soft roses and lilac within the clouds compliment the lush green rolling hills of the valley, evoking serenity of the rural summertime landscape.
