In both figurative and abstract work, Brandtner’s subjects were varied and included landscapes, cityscapes, still-lifes, portraits and anti-war images. Like countless others, he could not help but to be drawn to Georgian Bay, a quintessential Canadian subject. With its rocky islands and windswept trees, in “Georgian Bay” Brandtner adapts the landscape to his own style, in a teal palette with thick black contouring. In his personal and expressionist approach, he succeeded at being both a modern artist as well as a landscape painter. Brandtner formed a personal and contemporary vision of the Canadian wilderness.
