Following training in Toronto (at the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Art) and New York (at the Art Students League), John MacGillivray's colourful career brought him to important positions at institutions across Canada, including: Director of the Edmonton Art Gallery (1960-1967); Chief Installations Officer at the National Gallery of Canada (1967-1978); Installations Officer at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1979-1983) and Design Consultant at the Art Gallery of Ontario (1983-1989). MacGillivray also acted as a design consultant for other various exhibitions and reported on architectural designs submitted for the new National Gallery of Canada and National Museum of Civilization. While holding these prestigious positions, MacGillivray exhibited his work in galleries including: the McIntosh Art Gallery, University of Western Ontario, London (Solo Exhibitions in 1978 & 1989; Group Exhibition in 1988); the Sarnia Public Library and Art Museum (Group Exhibition, 1980) and the Art Gallery of Hamilton (Solo Exhibition, 1983). In 1989, the artist retired and focused his attention full-time on his painting in Toronto and travels to Greece.
