Acquired directly from the artist by Lieutenant Commander Donald Storey
By descent to the present Private Collection, Nova Scotia
A brightly coloured reminiscence of bygone Canadian tradition, this charming winter logging scene with oxen is an example of Maud Lewis's favourite subject matter and characteristic style. The painting was acquired directly from the artist at her home near Digby, Nova Scotia, by Lieutenant Commander Donald Storey when he was vacationing there after the war. The honourable Donald Storey was a proud veteran of WWII, a respected lawyer, and an enthusiastic member of many community organizations. “Winter Logging Scene” was lovingly placed on the mantle at Christmas time and was enjoyed by Lieutenant Commander Donald Storey until his passing.
