MacDonald was born in Point Anne, Ontario, a small town between Shannonville and Belleville, in the heart of the Bay of Quinte region, an area which MacDonald captured extensively through his career. In 1947 told “The Globe and Mail”, “I find an inexhaustible supply of material in this part of the country...I cannot understand any one who says he can't find anything to paint.”
