Joanne Tod is a contemporary artist best known for critiquing the status of painting as a medium in art history. Although she is most recognized for critiquing the medium through its very use, she has also experimented with media such as photography, as in “Esprit de mur” (1991). In this photograph, Tod showcases the subject matter she is best known for: women and the interior space as a means for provoking discussion on the dynamics of power and identity. The title of the artwork, “Esprit de mur”, loosely translates to "spirit of the wall", further prodding the viewer's conception of the meaning of space.
